Fences

 

Plant balsam poplars at 45 degrees to the ground and 1ft. apart alternating direction of slope.  If you can't follow that, click on the above link or visit the photo page.

This makes a very strong, self supporting living fence.

Arbours

 

Poplars and willows lend themselves to training into leafy tunnels arbours and bowers.

Plant about a foot apart and bend and twist to form the structure you want (there is a black and white photo at the end of the poplar training page.

Hedges

 

 You can easily maintain balsam poplars grown as a traditional hedgerow.  Plant them 2-3ft apart and keep trimmed to the required size.

If sideshoots on adjoining trees are bent down and twisted together the gaps will fill very quickly.
